PETER KITCHELL: TECH NOTES

DESCRIPTION AND CARE OF MOUNTED AND FINISHED WATERCOLORS:

PAPER: 140 lb. 100% rag "Lanaquarelle".

PIGMENT: Windsor & Newton, Ltd./Artists’ watercolor.

No fugitive pigments used.

BRUSH: Ganged lambswool Sumi. Three to nine brush combinations.

This paper has been soaked and stretched over heavy duty stretcher bars. A 1/4" thick door skin has been positioned behind the paper and covered with plastic to isolate the wood from the paper. Three coats of synthetic automotive lacquer have been applied to the paper and has proven to be good protection from sun light and moisture. However, it is advisable never to place the painting in direct sun light. The lacquer is non-yellowing and the surface of the painting can be washed with a soft, damp cloth. Glass or plexiglass is not required for protection of painting. However, in heavily trafficked areas a strip frame around the edges may be desirable. The final result is very much like a stretched canvas and every bit as durable.
